Whether gauzy or electrifying, his tunes capture the resonant sonorities of Carnival, a set at a tucked-away jazz club in São Paulo, and a fierce exchange between improv masters in any locale. Ovrutski’s bass ripples, races, and sashays above lush chords as piano lines add texture or punctuate with explosive statements. Saxophonist Chip McNeill and Tito Carrillo on trumpet will add their inimitable jazz inflections to ingenious songs that might soar or melt with delicious poignancy or blast the roof off this joint.
